BMCF Summer/Fall Newsletter 2025

In 2018, BMCF received an unexpected gift of $30,000 to support the educational dreams of current and former foster youth in LA County. We’ve since awarded more than $600,000 in scholarships—and this August, in honor of Biddy Mason’s birthday, we’re on track to award another $100,000!

We didn’t get here alone. Many “promise keepers” have stepped up for our scholars, like renowned historian Kevin Waite who created a scholarship for moms who were in foster care. The fund honors Hannah Embers who, like Biddy Mason, won her freedom from slavery and served her community as a midwife. The Booth family is providing generous support for future social workers, and our friends Belinda and Eugene Sanders have pledged 10 years of scholarship aid to a new student each year.

Foster youth are incredibly eager for vocational and higher education—they know it can transform their lives. That’s why requests for aid are rising: Last year, we received 125 applications, while this year we had more than 200!

As we approach the million-dollar mark in scholarships awarded, it’s my personal hope—and bold request—that you help us influence future generations for the better. Let’s not talk about change—let’s make change!

When Sherrie Bradford speaks, young people listen. A former foster youth, UCLA grad, and Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation (BMCF) scholarship recipient, she’s not here to tell a sob story.

“I love to prove people wrong. You count me out, I get excited,” she laughs. “I’m funny, I love to dance, to entertain, to be a grandma on the couch. But I’ve also started my master’s program as an MSW—a huge dream of mine—and connect foster and juvenile justice youth with the help they need. I see myself as a leader.”

After years with a foster family from a different cultural background, Sherrie was forced out when DCFS support ended. Homeless and unstable, she found a binder left by her social worker—and inside it, the resources that changed her life: BMCF, United Friends of the Children, and more.

“So many youth exit care without resources ingrained in them,” she reflects. “Having someone you can look up to; who can help you have fun; who waters you; who sees you as more than your story—they help you feel seen.”

Now working with CASA of Los Angeles and Alliance for Children’s Rights, Sherrie mentors youth navigating systems not built for them.

“I take a strengths-based approach, mapping out a career or education plan that’s feasible instead of focusing on the stigma of being a foster youth,” she explains. “I’m fighting for that little Black girl who didn’t have anyone checking on her…these kids just want someone to be there, even when they mess up.”

BMCF plays a critical role in supporting this vision—providing scholarships, housing, and a sense of belonging. Sherrie continues to push forward with confidence, launching a youth podcast, serving on the LA Youth Commission, and planning her own nonprofit focused on self-esteem and cultural sensitivity.

Her message to anyone wanting to help foster youth? Lead with empathy and invest in their success.

“Look deeper. Sit and ask someone if they’re okay. Expose their worth. Keep watering the seed.”

During National Foster Care Month in May, we brought our Foster Youth Resource Fair to a new venue at the Autry Museum!

Youth and families connected with 20 nonprofits, colleges, and programs, and enjoyed free lunch, clothing, hygiene products, and museum tours. Huge thanks to our volunteers, exhibitors, and our co-sponsors DCFS, California Lutheran Homes, and Starbucks.

Fairs like ours are critical. Access to resources directly correlates to reduced unemployment, homelessness, and incarceration for foster youth. Ready to join us next year and make a difference? Email info@biddymason.com to volunteer, donate, or exhibit.
