Discovering Freedom

21 July @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Image of enslaved people in the United States

BMCF is excited to invite you to a captivating event hosted in collaboration with the National Park Service, the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, and Starbucks Coffee.

This special gathering will spotlight new research on Biddy Mason who went from enslavement to entrepreneur in the early days of LA. As Councilmember Kevin de Léon recently announced his intent to rename LA’s Pershing Square in honor of Miss Mason, this is a timely opportunity to learn more about this remarkable historic figure.

Event Highlights:

  • New Research Unveiled: Learn about Biddy Mason’s life and her significant role shaping Los Angeles.
  • Celebrate Freedom Seekers: Explore the stories of other freedom seekers in Southern California who contributed to our city’s rich culture.
  • Foster Inclusive Knowledge of LA History: Learn practical ways to promote the oft-overshadowed contributions of Black individuals in Los Angeles within your own community.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are required. Please confirm your attendance by July 15, 2024 by emailing [email protected].
