Our History

We began in 2013 as an outreach ministry of the First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) church, LA’s oldest Black-founded church. Our first event for foster youth was a simple Thanksgiving dinner with just a handful of attendees.

By 2016, we became an independent nonprofit expanding innovative programs to hundreds of youth. Today, we partner with community members, nonprofits, the Department of Children and Family Services, and others to uplift current and former foster youth across LA County.

We’re named in honor of Bridget “Biddy” Mason, a formerly enslaved woman who won freedom for herself and 12 others in 1856. She went on to become one of the most influential entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and humanitarians in the city. Our mission is a direct continuation of her service to vulnerable people in LA.

Open our miracle home in West Adams as the central location for our operations

creating a home in los angeles

From day one, BMCF dreamt of creating a safe space for current and former foster youth. That dream soon came true.

In October 2020, California Lutheran Homes Foundation blessed BMCF with a 4,000 square-foot home in LA’s beautiful West Adams neighborhood. Today, the center is home base for our programs and a diverse range of Black history and art.

Your support as a donor or volunteer is invaluable for the future of those we serve.

Donations not only support our programs, but also help maintain the BMCF house. Gifts can support security to protect the current and former foster youth living at BMCF and property upgrades to convert our garage into a meeting space and distribution center for clothing and other resources.

We aim to create a warm environment for LA’s foster care community. Contact us at [email protected] to stop by for a tour and discover the impact of the BMCF house for yourself.
